This book presents a new translation of all surviving portions of Indica, written by Megasthenes around 310 BCE, the most detailed account of India’s geography, history, and customs known to the classical world. A pioneering work of ethnography, Indica shaped Greek understanding of India after the expedition of Alexander the Great and drew on Megasthenes’ residence in the Maurya capital, Pataliputra.
